Happy New Year, everyone! Perhaps a bit late, but it's still new, right?
I did a bit during New Year's (New Years? Forever a mystery as to how that's properly spelled) that I didn't get to post because it got SO BUSY. But I still wanted to get it out there, because it's a bit about my dad, and a bit about special someones, and I think just because it's focused on guys doesn't mean it won't strike a chord with both genders.
So here it is!

But I still wanted to get it out there, because it's a bit about my dad, and a bit about special someones, and I think just because it's focused on guys doesn't mean it won't strike a chord with both genders.
So here it is!
I had this notion that I wanted to meet a guy who does creative things for me, without prompting or prodding, who gets the ideas all on his own.
I wouldn’t care if he followed something from Pinterest or Instructables. It doesn’t have to be a completely new invention.
But just something creative and thought-through. Something that shows you put time into it.
That notion was altered today when I thought about the things my dad does for my mom.
Because my mom thought it would be a cool idea to drop a giant oyster in our town for New Years—Crisfield is literally built on the oyster industry—so my dad is building a big cardboard mollusk and I’m making a modge-podge pearl that’ll go inside and light up.
Now, when I say “creative things”, I’m thinking of romantic stuff. Cards, tissue paper flowers, fond tchotchkes and such. Definitely not New Years oysters.
But when it comes down to it, wouldn’t you rather have the guy who can and will do anything for you, not just romantic pleasantries?
My dad has made giant bread and butter costumes for Halloween. He’s done shelving and countless other DIY projects for my mom. Today, as he walked through the kitchen to return to manufacturing a mollusk, he commented that this was “not how he pictured spending his day off” from work.
But hours later, he’s made and painted a pretty spot-on, larger-than-life oyster.
A massive mollusk whose execution was amazing, descending and opening to reveal a glowing pearl—ahem, my contribution—as the New Year hit.
I wouldn’t say my dad is perfect; he still needs some practice when it comes to baking, and anyway, the day I meet someone perfect will probably be the day that I run away in fear, convinced they are a robot or an escaped human experimentation.
But when you find a guy that’s capable, and intelligent, and even just a touch creative, he’ll be a keeper.
You might have to wait a long time. You might even have to travel the whole world.
But I find comfort in the fact that, while a 24-7 romantic might be a tad unrealistic, a thoughtful guy who’s creatively capable is most certainly out there.
Somewhere.
